About Us

History

Physicians Insurance was founded in 1981 under the auspices of the Washington State Medical Association. At that time, the traditional insurance market for medical professional liability insurance in the state of Washington was going through a period of significant change. This was an era of instability and a crisis of affordability. Most importantly, the commercial market did not provide the information needed to identify the causes of adverse patient outcomes. Because of this, physicians concluded that they would be better served by creating a company of their own. Physicians Insurance promised that it would be a stable and reliable source of medical professional liability insurance for Washington physicians and has lived up to that promise and more.

Since January of 1982, when Physicians Insurance issued its first policy, other insurance carriers have entered the Washington market for medical professional liability, and several have departed. Since the company’s inception, Physicians Insurance has experienced steady growth and has built a strong financial base by providing exceptional customer service at competitive rates.

Physicians Insurance has grown to insure more than 5,800 physicians—in Washington as well as in Idaho and Oregon. As the health care environment changes and physicians require new insurance products and services, Physicians Insurance introduces excellent programs to best serve every policyholder.
