A. M. Best Company Reaffirms Physicians Insurance A Mutual Company’s A- (Excellent) Rating
Physicians Insurance, the Northwest’s leading medical professional liability insurance carrier, has had its A- (Excellent) rating by A. M. Best Company reaffirmed. For more than 100 years, A. M. Best, the world’s largest insurance rating agency, has provided independent reviews of insurance companies’ financial strength and solvency. This rating is assigned to companies that have, in A. M. Best’s analysis, an excellent ability to meet their ongoing obligations to policyholders. On April 8, 2010, A. M. Best reaffirmed Physicians Insurance’s A- rating, stating: “The rating reflects Physicians Insurance Group’s excellent risk-adjusted capitalization, conservative reserving philosophy, and aggressive claims defense position. The rating also recognizes the group’s specialty expertise and leading business position in writing medical professional liability insurance for health care providers in the state of Washington.” Mary-Lou A. Misrahy, president and CEO of Physicians Insurance, attributes the company’s A. M. Best A- (Excellent) rating to the continued discipline of Physicians Insurance executives, staff, and the board of directors. “Our underwriting and pricing strategies, coupled with our aggressive claims defense position and effective risk management programs, have sustained the success of our business model,” she said. Physicians Insurance A Mutual Company, a provider of medical professional liability and business-practice insurance products, serves more than 6,300 member physicians and clinics in the states of Washington, Idaho, and Oregon. Founded in 1981, the $365 million firm has grown to be the largest insurer of physicians in Washington State. Physicians Insurance maintains corporate headquarters in Seattle, with a regional office in Spokane, Washington.
