Continuing Medical Education
The mission of the Physicians Insurance Continuing Medical Education Program is:

  • to provide exemplary continuing medical education with demonstrable results in improved quality of medical care and reduced instances of adverse outcomes and
  • to assist physicians and allied health professionals to improve competency and performance in reducing the frequency and severity of malpractice claims.

What are the benefits of the Physicians Insurance program of continuing medical education (CME)?

  • We have strong organizational support and commitment. While most other CME providers rely heavily on the pharmaceutical industry for support, our entire CME program is funded by Physicians Insurance. We do not charge a registration fee to our members, nor do we accept commercial support. We have a dedicated CME staff and the enthusiastic involvement of physicians on our Risk Management/Education Committee and course-planning committees.
  • We are state-accredited at the highest level. Physicians Insurance is accredited by the Washington State Medical Association to sponsor continuing medical education for physicians. We are one of only a few state-accredited programs to have received an exemplary rating.
  • We have a focused program based upon well-defined topics. Our CME program is determined primarily by causes of physician lawsuits. Company claims records provide the basis of the case studies used in our curriculum. Physicians Insurance also participates in the Physician Insurers Association of America (PIAA) Data Sharing Project, one of the world’s largest sources of medical malpractice information. We have used this information to obtain early insights about clinical and claim developments on a national basis.
  • We respond to the needs of our members: It takes more than malpractice claims data to develop relevant, effective education. That’s why we keep in close touch with our insured members to determine specific areas of concern to them. Surveys are sent regularly to ascertain the best topics, teaching methodologies, and settings for seminars and self-study courses. We seek and welcome feedback on evaluation forms as well as through informal communication.
  • Our CME accommodates regional differences. Many of our seminars are presented at different locations throughout Washington State. Case studies reflect the resources available to a particular community. Presenters familiar with the physician culture and issues significant to that area are chosen for their credibility and relevance to local audiences. Our seminars offer personalized recommendations and the chance to meet informally with colleagues over a meal.
  • We’re on a mission to improve health care. The mission of our CME Program reflects part of the company’s mission: to improve the quality of medical care and reduce the instances of adverse outcomes of that care. Our aim is to offer you more than didactic updates—we expect our educational activities to trigger improvements in competence, performance, and patient outcomes.
