Physicians Insurance A Mutual Company Announces Executive Changes

Physicians Insurance, the Northwest’s leading medical professional liability carrier, announces the promotion of two company executives, Gary Morse and Eric Holm. Gary Morse, senior vice president, general counsel, and secretary, will assume executive oversight of the firm’s risk management and claims departments. Eric Holm, former director of projects, has been promoted to vice president of claims.

Gary Morse joined Physicians Insurance in 1989 as assistant vice president of risk management. In 1992, he assumed the position of general counsel and several years later was promoted to senior vice president, general counsel, and secretary. Morse’s in-depth understanding of medical professional liability insurance as well as health care risk management and patient safety issues have made him a valuable asset to the health industry on state and national levels. The company’s leadership and board of directors, as well as the Washington State Medical Association, rely on Morse’s extensive expertise in the regulatory and legislative arenas of tort reform and medical dispute resolution. He advises the Washington Liability Reform Coalition and the Washington Healthcare Forum on the development and implementation of medical dispute resolution strategies. A dedicated advocate of patient safety measures, Morse has been instrumental in forming company programs that enhance effective provider-patient communications, assess clinics’ safety policies, and promote providers’ well-being. Gary Morse earned his law degree from Stanford University in 1974.

Eric Holm has more than 25 years of medical professional liability experience in claims and litigation management at Aetna, CNA, and Physicians Insurance. He joined Physicians Insurance in 1989 as a senior claims representative, and was promoted to claims supervisor in 1992. Under the guidance and mentorship of now retired senior vice president of claims and risk management, Bruce Schafer, he gained invaluable experience in creative, effective, cutting-edge claims investigation; resolution methods; and support systems for insured physicians. Holm is recognized by peers for his in-depth knowledge and management skills. He graduated from Gonzaga University in 1982.

Mary-Lou A. Misrahy, president and CEO of Physicians Insurance, said, “It is the company’s commitment to ensure that the immeasurable contributions Bruce Schafer has made in the past 25 years to protecting physicians will endure. It is more critical than ever to execute our strategic initiatives and uphold our corporate goals to ensure that we sustain the high expectations of our insureds and our industry.”

Physicians Insurance A Mutual Company, a provider of medical professional liability and business-practice insurance products, serves more than 6,300 owner physicians and clinics in the states of Washington, Idaho, and Oregon. Founded in 1981, the $365 million firm has grown to be the largest insurer of physicians in Washington State.
