The Problem of Pediatric Vaccine Refusal (1 hour Monograph)

Hours: 1.00

Best suited for: Pediatricians, family physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and nurses. Other interested healthcare professionals are also welcome to participate.

Nine in 10 US pediatricians have experienced parental refusal of immunization, and 12% make it a policy to dismiss those families from their practices. This monograph will review the ethical, public health and family education issues from a risk management standpoint in the current dilemma to dismiss or not-to-dismiss.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion, participants should be able to:

  1. Educate vaccine-hesitant parents effectively and persistently.
  2. Access and be conversant with the new AAP position document on patient dismissal for vaccine refusal.
  3. Determine a policy appropriate to your practice on patient dismissal for vaccine refusal.
  4. When dismissing a pediatric patient, implement a dismissal procedure that reduces the risk for a successful allegation of patient abandonment.

Learning Assessment: There will be a post test for this activity with a minimum performance requirement of 8 out of 10 correct answers.

Estimated time to complete activity: 60 minutes
