Medical Liability

Type of Practice

Physicians Insurance’s Medical Professional Liability coverage includes coverage for both direct patient treatment and for vicarious liability for the conduct of other insured parties.  Free tail is provided to physicians who are retiring from the practice of medicine and have been on a claims-made policy for five or more years, with their last year having been insured through Physicians Insurance. Physicians can still work up to 60 days of locums per year and perform volunteer work to qualify for a free tail at retirement. Free tail is also provided in the event of death or disability.

Our standard Physicians Insurance policy contains the following coverage extras:

  • $50,000 HIPAA Defense Reimbursement coverage
  • $50,000 Cyber Liability coverage, with the opportunity to purchase higher limits or opt out of the coverage. Physicians Insurance offers an industry-leading cyber-liability program that provides comprehensive coverage with no deductible.
  • $50,000 Disciplinary Proceeding Defense Reimbursement coverage
  • $1 million peer-review coverage for services rendered on behalf of a formal accreditation, standards review, or similar professional board or committee of a hospital, state medical society, county medical society, or medical-specialty society.
  • $100,000 Employment Practices Liability (EPL) insurance, with the opportunity to purchase higher limits. Employment-related lawsuits are one of the fastest-growing types of civil litigation in the United States. To meet this threat, Physicians Insurance offers EPL coverage to meet our members’ human-resources needs.
