Ensuring high quality and safe patient care delivery is a goal that everyone working in healthcare strives to achieve. Peer review is an integral part of this effort, focusing on assessing the quality of care delivered, whether in an inpatient or outpatient setting. In the past, peer review has been viewed as judgmental, at times capricious, and time-consuming. Modern peer review processes are designed to mitigate those concerns, moving away from single case complication reviews. Instead, peer review should be seen as a model of continuous quality monitoring, intended to identify issues of concern which may be addressed in a timely fashion. This presentation will discuss the key role that peer review plays in ensuring patient safety, how peer review integrates clinical quality data, and the role of peer review with ongoing credentialing.
